6 Undiscovered Places To Explore Genting Highlands Off The Beaten Track

Genting Highland’s Secret Treasures

Whenever Genting Highlands is mentioned, what comes to mind is the casino, cooling weather, and an outdoor theme park that had recently closed. Of course, there’s still a long list of family-friendly activities that make it an ideal weekend getaway on a budget. But with the general misconception that there’s little to do there, few trips last longer than 3D2N.

Most people go to Genting and confine themselves within their hotel rooms, but what about the hidden places that most people - even Malaysians themselves - don’t quite know about? We took the liberty to scour its mountainous surrounds, and here’re 6 hidden things you never knew you could do in Genting Highlands.

1. Take in the sights and sounds of the little town of Gohtong Jaya

It’s a few kilometres below the peak of Genting Highlands and serves as the base cable car station for the Genting Skyway. Welcome to Gohtong Jaya, a little town that couldn’t be more different from the glitzy lights and sounds of the Genting Highland Resorts high above. The prices are cheap and the food are good - we’d recommend these two restaurants for those looking for a change of scenery from the resort’s restaurants.

One of the popular restaurants here is the Restoran Yik Kee, a Chinese restaurant specialising in Steamed Chicken, Curry Fish Head, and several freshwater fish dishes. They’re no slouches when it comes to dessert either, with sweet and soft durian tarts and durian cakes.

Address: Genting Highlands No. 22 & 23, Jalan Jati 1, Gohtong Jaya, Malaysia

Another restaurant recommended for visiting is the Restoran Chuan Kie, famous for their fried pork belly and salted vegetable soup.

Address: 29-30 Jalan Jati 1 (Gohtong Jaya), 69000 Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia

Apart from great food, the Gohtong Jaya township is also the starting point to visit the strawberry farms, begin a hiking trail, and take a dizzying ride all the way to the peak of the mountains. Most buses will make a stop at Gohtong Jaya, so be sure to get off and take in the sights and sounds before heading up to the resorts in the mountains.

Address: Gohtong Jaya, 69000 Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia

2. Be a farmer for a day at Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm

Just a few minutes from the Genting Highlands lies the Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm. It’s actually in Gohtong Jaya, the small township at the base of the Genting Skyway cable car system, so you’ll want to take a ride down if you’re staying in one of the main Genting hotels.

It’s an ideal location for a day trip - you can pick your own strawberries and take them home, snap pictures with fields of lavender, and enjoy MORE strawberry goodness at the cafe. Admission is free, while the strawberries you pick cost RM8 for every 100 grams.

Along with the berries, you can also find other cultivations like mushrooms, herbs and hydroponic vegetables.

Address: No. 1, Lot 3707, Jalan Jati 2, Bandar Gohtong Jaya,, Genting Highlands, 69000 Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia

Phone: +60 3-6100 1152

Opening Hours: 9.00 am - 6.30 pm daily

3. Go for an adventurous hike at Gunung Bunga Buah

This hiking trail starts from the township of Gohtong Jaya, and goes all the way up to 1430 metres above sea level. It’s not one for the faint-hearted or the late sleepers - completing this hiking trail will take 4 hours there and 4 hours back. The trail isn’t a steady uphill ascent either - it goes up and down several times, and the undergrowth is sufficiently dense that you’ll come into contact with nature in more ways than one. Still, it’s a welcome break from the air-conditioning.
While there’s a great view to be enjoyed, you should still watch out for leeches. They’re said to populate this hiking trail especially after a period of heavy rain. There’re tape markers along the way to guide tourists so they won’t get lost, but bring Google Maps just in case! Use this as an informative and detailed guide.

Address: Goh Tong Jaya, Genting Highlands, Genting Highlands, Malaysia - ask the locals for directions and they’ll be happy to assist.

Opening Hours: You can go at any time you like, but we suggest starting off as early as 7am to have the day ahead!

4. See the beautiful Chin Swee Cave Temple among the clouds

Just 10 minutes by bus or car from the Genting Highland resorts is Chin Swee Cave temple, a site built in 1976 that’s as photogenic as it’s religious. It’s located at 4,600 feet above sea level and so large that you’ll need at least half a day to cover it.

You’ll want to make the winding climb up the 9-storey pagoda (phew!), which overlooks the intricately-built Buddha temple. Here, devotees can dedicate lamps to those whom they seek blessings for.

If the weather is in your favor that day, you may be rewarded with a cloud-sheathed, panoramic view from the observation deck.

An attraction not to be missed is the Buddhist Journey to Enlightenment, with sculptures representing the 10 chambers of hell that’re sometimes gruesome. Sounds familiar? That’s right - you’ve found yourself at Genting Highlands’ very own Haw Par Villa.

Regular shuttle bus services run from the Genting Highlands hotels to the Chin Swee temple. Judging from the panoramic views and the tranquil atmosphere permeating the temple grounds, the temple is definitely worth a visit for a change of scenery.

Address: Genting Highlands, Pahang, 69000, Malaysia

Opening Hours: 7.00 am - 5.30 pm daily

5. See busy bees hard at work at the Happy Bee Farm

At the Happy Bee Farm, you’ll get to see how bees forage for their nectar naturally without human interference. The entire process of bees pollinating is explained, making this a great educational trip for knowledge beyond that of your My Pals Are Here! science textbook.

You’ll also get to buy as much of the sweet honey as you like, along with a selection of comb honey, royal jelly, and propolis.

Right beside Happy Bee Farm lies Insect World, a great place to learn all about the smaller creatures of our ecosystem. You can even join an insect mounting workshop where you’ll learn how to stick dead insects up with pins like how our schools stuck notices on the boards.

And finally, stop by Butterfly World where you’ll get to admire their beautiful wings or buy a few back home for display.

Address: Lot 6452, Genting View Resorts, KM11-3, Genting Highlands, Pahang

Phone: +60 3-6100 1000

Opening Hours: 9am - 9pm daily

6. Get up close and personal with wildlife at the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

It’s said that Kuala Gandah is the best place in Peninsular Malaysia to come face to face with these creatures. This elephant sanctuary is a place where orphaned elephants are taken in and given care and shelter. Not all elephants are taken in though - only injured elephants and elephants that have little chance of surviving in the wild. Other wild elephants are directly relocated to new living environments.

At Kuala Gandah, you can watch and help these elephants get fed and bathed - it’s a magical experience that kids won’t forget for the rest of their lives. Kuala Gandah is just 90km from Genting Highlands and 190 km from Kuala Lumpur, and is easily accessible by car or booking a day tour online. There’s no entrance fee, but you’re encouraged to make a donation before you leave!

Address: Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Kuala Gandah, 28500 Lanchang, Pahang Darul Makmur

Phone: +609 - 2790 391

Opening Hours: 10.30 am - 4 pm (Activities with elephants start after 2pm)

Genting Like You’ve Never Seen It

The next time someone derides Genting as being just hotels and a casino, make sure you correct them. Those are things Genting is primarily known for, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t more things to explore in the region. Once you’re armed with elephant wefies, honey pots, and hiking photos, people won’t be so quick to dismiss the destination as “just a casino complex” again.

There's plenty happening here in Genting - EAT, PLAY & DO - are only some of our suggestions to fulfil your getaway needs. There's still plenty left undiscovered and all that's waiting for you.

First World Hotel & Plaza

First World Hotel and Plaza is a three-star hotel in Resorts World Genting, Pahang, Malaysia. Featuring a total of 7,351 rooms, it has set the Guinness World Records for the largest hotel in the world (by number of rooms). In 2006, it featured 6,118 rooms, making it the largest hotel until The Palazzo took the title, an expansion of The Venetian located on Las Vegas Strip which was officially opened on 1 January 2008. In 2015, First World Hotel regained the title after an opening of a new block. The hotel has received 35.5 million guests since 2006.

Features

First World Hotel consists of Tower 1 and Tower 2 with 3,164 standard rooms, 292 deluxe rooms, 649 deluxe triple rooms, 480 superior deluxe rooms, and 136 world club rooms. It is managed by First World Hotel and Resorts Sdn Bhd, one of two major companies operating at Resorts World Genting. In 2015, First World Hotel extended Tower 2 Annex which has altogether 1,286 rooms including new rooms named XYZ Deluxe and XYZ Triple. The average size of the rooms is 170.70 square feet.

First World Hotel is the first hotel in Southeast Asia to launch E-Kiosk or Express Check-in and Check-out kiosks.

Hotel layout

First World Plaza

One floor above the lobby level of the hotel is a 500,000-square-foot (46,000 m2) plaza called the First World Plaza, housing retail and dining outlets and Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park attractions.

The hotel also connects to the brand new shopping mall, SkyAvenue which also house the Awana Skyway station that links to the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets.

First World Plaza is a shopping centre located below First World Hotel, the biggest hotel in Genting Highlands, Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia. It comprises the hotel lobby for First World Hotel. Attractions in the plaza includes bowling center, cineplex, "watersplash" pool (a warm indoor swimming pool made for mostly young children), Genting International Convention Center, Haunted Adventure and a Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum. A casino was also built on the location of the previous "The Pavilion" which was a concert venue for entertainment-related performances. Entertainment-related performances such as dances, acrobatic shows and magical shows are held in an area called Times Square. However, all of these attractions had been closed under the First World Plaza refurbishment and the Twentieth Century Fox World construction projects.

On 1 June 2017, the whole plaza was closed for refurbishment. On 1 August 2017, SnowWorld, Genting Bowl and Funtasy World Video Games Park within the plaza were also closed to make way for the development work of the new indoor theme park. In 2018, the plaza reopened with new retail and dining outlets. Singapore-based retailer Tangs opened its fourth outlet in Malaysia, on the second floor of First World Plaza.

Along with First World Hotel, First World Plaza is managed by First World Hotels and Resorts Sdn Bhd, one of the companies operating in Resorts World Genting.

Awana Skyway

The Awana Skyway, also referred to as the new Awana Skyway (circa. 2016), is a gondola lift system connecting Awana Transport Hub, Chin Swee Temple and SkyAvenue in Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia since December 2016. The Awana Transport Hub terminus consists of the new Awana Bus Terminal, the station building and a new 8-storey car park while the other terminus is located at SkyAvenue.

The Awana Skyway is one of the two aerial lines serving Genting Highlands, with the Genting Skyway serving as an alternate route. The gondola lift system was launched in 2016, and it replaces the former 2-car aerial tramway system running between 1977 and 2014. The gondola lift system can carry up to 3,600 passengers per hour with 10 passengers per gondola. At the maximum speed of 6 metres per second (21.6 km/h), the 2.8-kilometre journey up the mountain peak takes about 10 minutes, though it varies on the weather conditions.

Aerial tramway-based (Old, 1977)

The old cable car uses a jig-back system: A large electric motor is located at the bottom of the tramway so that it effectively pulls one cabin down, using that cabin's weight to help pull the other cabin up. A similar system of cables is used in a funicular railway. The two passenger cabins are situated at opposite ends of the loops of cable. Thus, while one is coming up, the other is going down the mountain, and they pass each other midway on the cable span. It ceased its operations since 1 April 2014 to make way for the construction of an all-new monocable gondola system similar to the one used on Genting Skyway by Leitner Ropeways.

Gondola lift-based (New, 2016)

The new monocable gondola lift built by Leitner Ropeways uses 60 mm diameter solid cable wire ropes as opposed to Genting Skyway's 54 mm diameter solid cable wire ropes. Likewise, they are among the strongest monocable gondola installations in the world. Similarly, it is equipped with high-tech electronic equipment and was built in accordance with stringent Swiss regulations. It also has a double safety circuit which is completely independent.

The foundation used for the pylons is of the "Hang-dug Caisson" type. Each pylon is founded on four Caissons measuring 1.2 metres in diameter, which are socketed down to bedrock. The average depth of the Caissons is about 40 m (135 feet) and each group of four Caissons piles can take a vertical load of 4,000 tonnes against the maximum vertical load of 150 tonnes from the cable car system. The Caissons method is about the safest and strongest foundation in existence, designed specifically for hilly terrain. Each pylon is accessible via rescue tracks on the ground, whilst each gondola is equipped with radio communication equipment from the stations. The new gondola lift spans on 22 pylons as opposed to the former 5 towers.

Third time in Sky Avenue, RW Genting, and still never get bored with this place. We are still impress with their spectacular SkySymphony show, the spacious surrounding and of course, plenty of food to eat, thanks to the wide selections of restaurants and cafes. Compile 13 restaurants & cafes to visit in Sky Avenue, picked from our few times of dining here. Keep it as a mini guide, and hope you can find your favourites here too.
1.  Nene Chicken
Established since 1999 with over 1200 outlets in South Korea alone, we bet the power of Nene Chicken shouldn’t be underestimated. Tasted 3 signature flavours – Original, Bulgogi and Freaking Hot & Spicy during our last visit to SkyAvenue Genting, and have to say that : It is so good!

Enjoy the Bulgogi Fried Chicken the most. Tender meat with crunchy exterior, further coated with authentic Bulgogi sauce and hint of garlics. Like the Freaking Hot & Spicy Chicken too. Despite it is freaking spicy as it is named, but so addictive! Consider manageable if you are real spicy food lovers.
2.  Royale Vietnam
The only Vietnamese restaurant in SkyAvenue, also a reputable restaurant which has been around in Genting Highlands for many years.

6. Burger & Lobster

We especially enjoy their Soy Milk Curry Laksa, a generous bowl of  thick, smooth noodles immersed in very flavourful broth that carries mild spiciness, topped with long beans, eggplant, potato, mock meat. Healthier and quality ingredients, meatless but with no compromise on the taste.
8.  Sushi Zanmai
Oh yass, Sushi Zanmai is now in Sky Avenue too! The restaurant is located near to the outdoor area at Level 4, quite hidden and hard to locate if you came from the mall’s center court, but worth the extra time to find.

Sushi, Sashimi, Salad, Yakimono, Doburi, Tempura, Nabemono and more, eat your heart out! We had a great feast at Sushi Zanmai with a group of friends. Personally recommend Ebi Mentaiyaki, Nabeyaki Udon, Yaki Soba, Chicken Gyoza, Gindara Teriyaki, Mentaiko Spider Roll and Salmon Mentai Roll. There are still many other dishes to check on their extensive menu, so be sure to re-visit. LOL.
9.  Dal.Komm Coffee
Personally, we feel that one of the best outlets for Dal.Komm Malaysia is none other but the Dal.Komm at Genting Sky Avenue. It is located outdoor with an al-fresco area. Imagine sipping on refreshing Premium Chocolate de Shake, bite into irresistible Caramel Honey Shibuya Toast that is crispy at the edges, fluffy soft at the center with mellow butter goodness while enjoying the cold breeze caress through your face! Beautiful experience that makes us feel like we are eating dessert during oversea Autumn season!

They are launching Bird Nest Porridge soon too, adding a touch of luxury in a heart-warming food.
11.  Boat Noodles
Boat noodles, or more known as Kuai Tiao Ruea in Thailand is a type of popular Thai street food, which was originally sold from wooden boat, hence the name. Here in Malaysia, slurp this delicious “noodles in mini bowls” at Boat Noodle, and see how much you can indulge into.
